September 7, Labor Day

Week of Sept. 2-6, 2013

City offices and facilities will be closed Monday, September 7, for Labor Day, but solid waste and recycling will be collected as usual.  Expect service on the regular Monday-through-Thursday schedule during the week.

Corner Icon Golf cart laws...  South CarolinaGolf Cart Graphic regulates how golf carts may be driven on the public streets.  The complete list of golf cart requirements is available.  Among other things, the cart needs a D.M.V. permit and liability insurance. 


Corner Icon City Zoning Code...  Developed during more than 100 public meetings, Myrtle Beach's new Zoning Code took effect in late 2014.  The new Zoning Map is available, on-line, too.  It's 40 megabytes.

Here's what's happening...


   
 

Orange Box  Election filing period...  The filing window for Myrtle Beach's November 3 municipal election continues until 12:00 p.m., Friday, September 4.  Voters will choose three City Council members this fall.  Council elections are nonpartisan and at-large, with members serving four year terms. Candidate packets will be available at City Hall.  Prospective candidates must file a statement of candidacy with the city clerk and a statement of economic interest with the South Carolina Ethics Commission. 

 

Orange Box  City government Facebook page... The City of Myrtle Beach now has an official Facebook page for up-to-the-minute information about city services, events, programs and activities.  Please check it out and "like" us on Facebook! 

 

Orange Box  Lightning safety brochure...  The City of Myrtle Beach has created a new brochure about lightning safety.  Do you know what do to and where to go when a thunderstorm threatens?  See the Lightning Safety Brochure for tips, along with facts and myths.  (Note:  To print the brochure, set "page scaling" to "none."  It will print and fold correctly.)

 

Orange Box  Myrtle's Market...  Come to the farmers' market for fresh vegetables and fruits every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Items include handmade crafts, local honey and homemade desserts.  Myrtle's Market is at Oak Street and Mr. Joe White Avenue.  Call 918-4906.

 

Orange Box  Seasonal hours...  Dogs and bicycles are allowed on the beach before 10:00 a.m. and after 5:00 p.m. from May 1 through Labor Day.  Dogs and bicycles are allowed on the boardwalk only between 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. from May 1 through Labor Day.  At all times, dogs must be on a leash and you must pick up and properly dispose of droppings.

 

Orange Box  Beach rules prohibit tents... Myrtle Beach restricts the use of tents and other shading devices, except umbrellas, from Memorial Day through Labor Day.  Umbrellas up to seven-and-a-half feet in diameter are allowed during those summer months.  From the day after Labor Day until Memorial Day, tents up to 12-by-12 feet and less than nine feet tall may be used behind the umbrella line and 10 feet apart.  Visit our Tent Rules page for a printable hand-out. 

 

Orange Box  Fourth Avenue North Deepwater Ocean Outfall...  Work is underway on a new deepwater ocean outfall at Fourth Avenue North.  Completion is scheduled for November 2015 on this $10.4 million project that will carry rainwater more than 1,000 feet off shore.  A print-on-demand brochure with details about the project and timeline is available.

 

Orange Box  Parking meters in effect...  Parking meters and pay stations are in place from March 1 through October 30 in the commercial areas east of Kings Parking meterHighway.  See our Parking Meter page for more information, including an update on new hourly rates for parking.  If you have a valid handicapped hang tag or license plate, or a Purple Heart or Disabled American Veterans (DAV) license plate, you may park free at any public meter in South Carolina.  (This exemption does not apply to private meters or pay stations.)
