Cultural and Leisure Services encompasses several divisions, including Parks, Recreation, Building Maintenance, Chapin Memorial Library and Whispering Pines Golf Course. Jimmie Walters is the Cultural and Leisure Services Director. For more information, call (843) 918-1191. The Parks Division is responsible for keeping up the city’s beautiful landscaping, especially in the constantly-growing network of parks. In addition, this division maintains grass, trees and shrubs in the highway medians and rights of ways, cleans the beach each day during the early morning hours, and provides litter control services on Kings Highway and other heavily traveled areas. Richard Kirby is the Parks Superintendent. For service assistance, dial (843) 918-2390. The Recreation Division is divided into Facilities and Programs. Facilities available for public use include four indoor centers, a roller rink and a skateboard park. The recreation centers include weight rooms, meeting rooms, gymnasiums, game rooms, indoor and outdoor pools, dressing rooms, arts and crafts rooms racquetball courts, a dance floor, a stage and other spaces. Recreation programs include sports, aquatics, youth care, special events and special population instruction, all serving a wide range of ages and abilities. In addition, the Recreation Division operates and maintains 16 outdoor fields and a stadium. These are used for softball, baseball, football, soccer and special events. Outdoor basketball and tennis courts are located throughout the city for public use. Pam Stone is Recreation Superintendent. For general information concerning recreation, dial (843) 918-1187. Chapin Memorial Library, at 400 14th Avenue North, is the only municipally owned and operated library in the state. Chapin Library is open six days a week, offering a children's department, reference section, adult fiction and non-fiction, video tapes, audio tapes, newspapers, magazines, large print materials, Internet access, and more. The library interacts closely with county and state library systems. With proof of residency within Horry County (of which Myrtle Beach is a part), one can obtain a free library card. Visitors to the area may also gain access to all library services by paying an annual fee of $10.00. The money is used to help purchase books and other circulating materials. Library hours are: Monday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; Tuesday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m.; Wednesday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; Thursday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday, Closed. Whispering Pines Golf Course, at the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, offers 18 convenient and beautiful holes of golf. The course covers 6,771 yards through 250 acres of mature hardwoods and pines. Whispering Pines provides above-average availability for local golfers and excellent customer service. The Building Maintenance Division maintains 97 city facilities and 132 dune walkovers at street ends along the beach.
