The Recreation Services Department consists of four recreation centers (General Robert H. Reed Recreation CenterCrabtree Memorial GymnasiumMary C. Canty Recreation Center and Pepper Geddings Recreation Center), two athletic complexes (the Frank M. Beckham Recreation Complex and the Grand Park Athletic Complex), the Myrtle Beach Tennis CenterChapin Memorial Library, the Matt Hughes Skateboard Park, the Outdoor Inline Roller Hockey Rink, the Historic Myrtle Beach Train Depot and Myrtle's Market Farmers' Market.

The Recreation Services Department maintains 23 outdoor fields for softball, baseball, football, soccer, lacrosse, track and field and special events.  See our Sports Tourism pages for additional information and inquiries for field rental availability and opportunities.  Recreation Services also provides maintenance and program assistance at the Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum and Education Center.

Myrtle Beach offers a variety of classes and activities for all ages through its recreation facilities and programs.  Recreation center membership fees are reasonable, and memberships are available at Crabtree Memorial GymnasiumMary C. Canty Recreation Center and Pepper Geddings Recreation Center.  The recreation centers feature weight rooms, meeting rooms, gymnasiums, game rooms, indoor pools, dressing rooms, arts and crafts rooms, racquetball courts, a dance floor, a stage and other spaces.  The General Robert H. Reed Recreation Center and Mary C. Canty Recreation Center offer other amenities, including meeting rooms and banquet halls with warming kitchens.  The Myrtle Beach Train Depot also is available for meetings and small events.

Recreation programs include adult and youth sportsaquaticsyouth programs, fitness classes, dance classes, martial arts, and special population instruction, all serving a wide range of ages and abilities.  Outdoor basketball, five tennis courts and four pickleball courts are available for public use at Midway Park on Kings Highway at 19th Avenue South.  In addition, the Recreation Division operates and maintains numerous outdoor fields for softball, baseball, football, soccer and special events.  See our Sports Tourism pages for additional information.  Outdoor basketball and tennis courts also are available for public use. 

Chapin Memorial Library, 400 14th Avenue North, is the only city-owned and operated library in the state.  Chapin Library is open six days a week, offering a children's department, reference section, adult fiction and non-fiction, video tapes, audio tapes, newspapers, magazines, large print materials, internet access, e-books and more.  The library interacts closely with county and state library systems.  Library hours are 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Friday; and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday.  For more information, call 843-918-1275.

MATT HUGHES SKATEBOARD PARK

Rules for use are posted, and helmets are required!  When the park opened in 1998, it was named in honor of Matthew Reed Hughes, a local skateboarder who tragically died following a skating accident near his home.
