Neighborhood Watch

Crime prevention programs

The Myrtle Beach Police Department works with more than a dozen active Neighborhood Watch programs throughout the city.  Crime prevention officers help coordinate monthly programs and keep residents informed about activities available to them or of interest in their neighborhoods.  To start a Neighborhood Watch in your area, call the Crime Prevention Section at 843-918-1806.

The city's proactive approach includes Project I.D., a citizens' burglary prevention program.  Marked items are less likely to be stolen and more likely to be recovered in the event of a theft.  The Hot Fax program alerts local businesses to complaints and other crime prevention information through the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.  The city also offers Business Watch, Postal Watch and Fleet Watch programs.

Here are safety tips to keep in mind for your vehicle.

  • Never leave any items or valuables in plain sight in your vehicle. Always lock packages, purses, electronic equipment and other items in the trunk.
  • Always turn off your engine, roll up the windows, lock the doors and take your keys, even if you are just making a quick stop.
  • Donít leave spare keys in your vehicle. An experienced thief knows all the hiding places. Store spare keys in your wallet.
  • Park in well-lighted, visible areas near your destination. Avoid parking close to trucks and other objects that obstruct visibility and provide hiding places.
  • Use your garage, if you have one. If you have to park on a street, avoid dark or isolated areas.
  • Check your vehicle if you hear the alarm sound, but donít try to stop a person attempting to break in. Get a good description of the person and call the police.
  • Chain bicycles to stationary objects when unattended.
