Weekly Road Construction Update

November 15 - November 21, 2009

SCDOT Traffic Cams for Horry County

Residents and visitors who've wished for new and better roads are having their wishes granted.  During the past few years, the area has received a billion dollars worth of construction to make traveling to and through the Grand Strand much easier.  Below are weekly project updates, along with any detours or lane closures.  For more information on the new road network, visit the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce or the South Carolina Department of Transportation

Note:    On US 17 in North Myrtle Beach, expect nighttime lane closures from the Intracoastal Waterway bridge to S-22-759 (Waterford Road) and on SC 9 from S-26-20 (Sea Mountain Highway) to S-26-1332 (Plantation Drive).

Note:    On US 17 in Murrells Inlet, expect nighttime lane closures from SC 707 to Brookgreen Gardens, Friday through Friday, 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.

Note:    On Pee Dee Highway, expect flagger operations from US 378 to Johnson Shortcut Road Monday through Saturday.

Note:    On Jordanville Highway at Aynor High School, expect lane closures for driveway paving, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH CONNECTOR

Descr:        New location roadway from US 17 at Main Street intersection, traveling west across the Intracoastal Waterway along Firetower Road, with interchanges at SC 31 and SC 90.

Status:       The new road is open, but lane closures are possible throughout the week.

US 378 BRIDGE REPLACEMENTS

Descr:        This project will replace eight bridges on US 378 in Horry and Marion counties.  The project begins 2 miles west of the intersection of US 378 and SC 908 in Marion County, and ends less than a mile from the intersection of US 378 and Pee Dee Highway in Horry County.  The project is approximately eight miles long.  The new bridges will be built next to the existing bridges so the road will remain open, but the speed limit on this section of US 378 has been reduced to 45 m.p.h.  The anticipated completion date is winter of 2011.

Status:       Work will be outside of the roadway, but construction equipment will be entering the highway periodically, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Funding for this massive road construction boom comes from a variety of sources.  The largest share is from RIDE, the Road Improvement Development Effort, which is funded through a county-wide hospitality fee of 1.5 percent.  The South Carolina Department of Transportation and the City of Myrtle Beach also are contributing, as is the Grand Strand Area Transportation Study (GSATS).
