Classes and Activities

Pepper Geddings Recreation Center

 
       

The following classes and activities are offered at Pepper Geddings Recreation Center.  Pre-registration is required for all classes.  For more information, call Pepper Geddings Recreation Center at 918-2280 or come by the center at 3205 Oak Street and sign up!  We reserve the right to cancel any class that does not meet minimum enrollment.  Full refund will be provided for any class we cancel.  Can’t find a class or activity to suit your needs?  Call 918-2280 and discuss it with us.

 

PRE-SCHOOL (AGES 3 – 5)

 

Start Smart Sports:  This is a proven instructional program that prepares children for the world of organized sports without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt.  Children work on learning all the fundamentals of sport including catching, passing, kicking and running in a fun atmosphere.  Classes meet from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.  Fees:  $25 City Resident / $42 Non-City Resident. Pre-registration is required.

 

Monday – Lacrosse (June 21 – July 26)

Tuesday – All Sport (June 22 – July 27)

Thursday – Football (June 23 – July 28)

 

YOUTH PROGRAMS

 

Birthday Parties at Pepper Geddings:  Calling all kids!  Sign up to have your birthday party at the “Rec”.  Choose from swimming or gym games with a party room.  The hourly room rental fee is $20 for city residents and $35 for non-city residents.  If you choose to swim there is a $1 fee per child and $5 for adults.  For more information call 918-2280.

 

Karate:  (Ages 5 & Over)  Tae Kwon Do is a martial art that uses both the hands and feet.  It is a sport that physically benefits the whole body.  One can develop flexibility, stamina, motor skills, strength, energy, self-confidence and balance.  Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.  Classes are ongoing, with fees due at the start of each month.  New members are always welcome.  Fees:  $7 City Resident / $12 Non-City Resident, monthly at the front desk, and $24 monthly to the instructor.

 

Summer Sport and Fitness Camps:

  • Register early as space is limited

  • Camps meet daily from 9:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

  • Fee:  $50 City Residents/$85 Non-City Residents

  • Bring your own lunch each day.  Lunch will not be provided.

  • Early drop-off:  8:00 – 9:00 a.m.  Open gym.

  • Open swim included each day from 2:30 – 5:30 p.m.

  • Open gym available daily from 2:30 – 5:30 p.m.

  • All campers must be picked up by 5:30 p.m.

Basketball Camp:  Go to the next level!  These camps are packed with competition and drills to boost your skills.  All players will learn to apply their abilities through individual and group instruction.  Continue developing your talents throughout the summer.

 

Grades 2 – 5:  July 26 - 30

 

Volleyball Camp:  Be a step ahead!  Learn the basics of volleyball or increase your abilities.  This camp will teach all the fundamentals of serving, passing, setting, blocking, and spiking.  These skills will advance your game for beach play or making the school team.  Camp will meet indoors and outdoors, as appropriate to best teach the skills of the sport.

 

Grades 3 – 5:  June 21 - 25

 

All Sport Camp:  Prepare to compete!  This camp will introduce the campers to basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball and lacrosse as well as increase their understanding of these games.  Fun and fitness will be emphasized along with the fundamentals of speed, coordination, agility and strength.  Skills will be taught in a non-threatening environment and age appropriate equipment will be used to minimize fear and optimize success.  This camp will meet indoors and outdoors, as appropriate to best teach the skills of the sport.

 

Grades 2 – 5:  June 14 – 18, July 12 – 17, July 19 – 23 and August 9 - 13

 

Soccer Camp:  Take the lead!  Improve your personal skills; learn the basics of ball handling and team play.  Drills and game situations will be used to emphasize both individual improvement and teamwork.  This camp will meet indoors and outdoors, as appropriate to best teach the skills of the sport.

 

Grades 3 – 5:  June 21 – 25

 

Triathlon Camp:  This camp will focus on the three disciplines that make up a triathlon – swimming, biking, running.  Each day, Monday through Thursday, will consist of training the in the pool, biking the block around Pepper Geddings and running throughout the complex.  The camp will conclude with Race Day Friday.  Campers ages seven to ten will swim 100 yards, bike 5k and run 1k.  Campers ages 11 – 14 will swim 200 yards, bike 10k and run 2k.

 

Ages 7 – 14:  August 16 – 20

 

Lacrosse Camp:  The fastest game on the beach!  Whether you’ve played for years, months or never before, this camp will help you learn and improve your basic skills for playing the game.  Groundballs, cradling, passing and shooting will be emphasized.  No equipment?  No worries!  If you have it, wear it, but it not we will provide at least a stick and drills that are safe and fun.  This camp will meet indoors and outdoors, as appropriate to best teach the skills of the sport.

 

Ages 7 – 14:  June 28 – July 2

 

Skate Clinic and Club:  Rain or shine, kids ages 8-11 learn to skate and more in a fun and safe atmosphere!  Clinic meets on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m., through June 3.  Meet at the Matt Hughes Skate Park behind Pepper Geddings.  Helmets are required.  Fees: $10 City Resident / $17 Non-City Resident.  Pre-registration is required.

 

ADULT AND SENIOR PROGRAMS

 

Fitness Over 50:  A fun and active workout geared just for our over 50 folks.  Upbeat music, moderate impact activity and a group of folk from age 50 – 90 are the perfect combination for fun!  Class meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.  Fees:  $42 for City Residents and $75 for Non-City Residents for 24 visits or you may use the fitness punch card.  Class is on-going, and new members are always welcome.

 

Fitness Punch Card:  Our punch card is now available for all classes in the following list.  The punch card is a great way to try different classes and mix up your workout routine.  The card contains 24 punches, and the cost is $30 for City Residents and $50 for Non-City Residents.

 

AB Express:  15 minutes of total abdominals!  Six packs available here.  This class is free in combination with any other class.

 

5:00 – 5:15 p.m., Monday and Wednesday (following BOSU)

6:30 – 6:45 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday (following BOSU)

6:15 – 6:30 p.m., Friday (following Kettlebells)

 

Grab Bag:  It’s a surprise!  Something new and different each class.  Learn to use kettle bells, BOSU, steps and barbells.  Stay motivated with a variety of fun workouts.

 

7:00 – 7:45 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday

 

BOSU:  Do you BOSU?  Join our latest class.  BOSU is a great way to improve core strength and tone your abdominal and back muscles.

 

4:30 – 5:00 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday

6:00 – 6:30 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday

 

Body Sculpt:  This is an intense, full body workout designed to stretch and tone all muscles.  We will use various types of equipment to challenge and motivate for ultimate performance.

 

10:00 – 10:45 a.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday

 

Pilates:  Come and enjoy fitness training and mind-body breathing connection information based on the method of Joseph Pilates.  Build a longer, leaner and stronger body using mats, exercise balls and many unique movements.

 

5:30 – 6:30 p.m., Monday and Wednesday

9:00 – 10:00 a.m., Tuesday and Thursday

 

Zumba:  Join the party!  It’s fun, different, easy and effective.  Zumba is a Latin inspired dance fitness class.  Tone and sculpt your body while dancing in a healthy party like atmosphere.

 

8:00 – 8:45 a.m., Monday through Friday

7:00 – 7:45 p.m., Monday and Wednesday

 

Kettlebells:  A challenging experience new this year at Pepper Geddings.  This full body workout is guaranteed to push you to your limits, work your core and build muscle.

 

4:45 – 5:30 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday

5:30 – 6:15 p.m., Friday

Aquatic Lessons and Programs

 

Summer Swim League (Registration underway)

 

Register now for the Summer Swim League at Pepper Geddings and Canal Street Recreation Centers.  Where great swimmers get their start!  The City of Myrtle Beach Summer Swim League was developed to continue and build on the skills learned in swim lessons fostering an interest in fitness and competitive swimming that will last a lifetime.  It is intended to be a low to medium pressure, high excitement introduction to competitive swimming, which can be a very important developmental experience, especially for swimmers age 12 and younger. Swimmers must have enough ability to swim the required age group distances prior to entering the league. Swimmers age eight and under must be able to swim at least 25 yards while those  nine and older must be able to swim at least 50 yards.  The primary goal of the Summer Swim League is to introduce, encourage and develop a love for the sport of swimming, while instilling the values of good sportsmanship, hard work, respect and team work.  The Summer Swim League provides quality competitive swimming instruction, competition and water safety at a level that is designed to be fun for the athletes, parents and coaches.  Swimming, like life, is both competitive and fun.  Choose your team by your practice time and place.  All swim meets will be held Thursday evenings at Pepper Geddings Recreation Center.  The championship meet will be held at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, July 31.  Call 918-2280 for more information.

Class Descriptions:

 

Infant/Toddler Swim Classes

Age:  6 months – 3 years

Fee:  $25.00 city resident/ $42.00 non-city resident

 

Developed for children 6 months to 3 years of age:  American Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water.  Parents and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and more.  **Special Requirements:  An adult must accompany the child in the water, and swim diapers are required for those children who are not potty-trained.

 

Pre-School Swim Classes

Age:  3 - 5 years

Fee:  $25.00 city resident/$42.00 non-city resident

 

Pre-School 1 - This class is for children with minimal or no water experience.  It is for non-swimming children who are not yet comfortable putting their face in the water.

 

Pre-School 2 - This class is for children who are comfortable in the water, can put their face in, but are not yet swimming or floating (front and back) on their own.

 

Pre-School 3 - This class is for children who are very comfortable in the water, can front and back float for at least 5 seconds with NO assistance, and are swimming on their own with NO assistance or floatation device.

 

Youth Swim Classes
Age:  5-12 years
Fee:  $35.00 city resident/$58.00 non-city resident

 

Level 1 – This class is for children with minimal or no water experience.  Non-swimming children who are not yet comfortable with their face in the water belong in this class.

 

Level 2 – This class is for children with some water experience who are comfortable putting their faces in the water, but are not yet swimming on their own.

 

Level 3 – This class is for children who can swim and float unassisted on both the front and back, but are just beginning to work on strokes.

 

Level 4 – This class is for children who can swim front and back crawl for 15 yards and tread water for at least 30 seconds.

 

Level 5 – This class is for children who can swim 25 yards of front and back crawl, as well as 15 yards of breaststroke and elementary backstroke.

 

AQUATIC FITNESS CLASSES

 

Hydroaerobics:  The perfect blend of water and workout!  This is a low impact, fast paced aerobic program designed to improve heart-lung capacity, flexibility and muscular strength.  The class is held in the shallow end of the pool, so no swimming skills are needed.  Class meets from 8:00 – 8:45 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 5:15 – 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.  Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents, $8 for non-city residents or get an 18 visit punch card for $45 for city residents or $75 for non-city residents.

 

Off The Deep End:  This class moves the workout to deep water.  This is a high intensity, non-impact aerobic exercise class.  This program is an excellent cross training and rehabilitative opportunity.  The water workout helps build muscular strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness.  Class members wear buoyancy vests for added floatation.  Participants should be comfortable in deep water.  Class meets on Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 – 8:45 a.m.  Fees:  Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents, $8 for non-city residents or get an 18 visit punch card for $45 for city residents or $75 for non-city residents.

 

Grand Strand Masters Swimming:  United States Masters Swimming (USMS) is a national organization that provides organized workouts, competitions, clinics and workshops for adults aged 18 and over.  Programs are open to all adult swimmers (fitness, tri-athlete, competitive, non-competitive) who are dedicated to improving their fitness through swimming.  Participation in meets is encouraged, but not required.  Join the group for fitness, stroke development, motivation, competition and fun!  Masters meet M/W/F from 6:30-7:30am at Pepper Geddings Recreation Center.  You must also join United States Masters Swimming. We require this so that GSMS has liability insurance. USMS fees are $35 per year payable at http://www.usms.org/reg/.  For more information contact Pepper Geddings Recreation Center at 918-2280 or e-mail Kathy Anderson The Masters team practices from 6:30 – 7:30 a.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Any swimmer registered with USMS is welcome to join this workout time.  Free for members or $5 for adults and $3 for seniors.
