The Myrtle Beach Garden Club dedicated a Gold Star Memorial Plaque in Warbird Park this week. The bronze marker honors Gold Star families who lost a loved one while defending the country in the Armed Forces. A blue star signifies that you have a family member on active duty, but a gold star indicates that a family member died in military service. Jim and Susan Harvey, whose son was killed in Afghanistan during 2011, revealed the marker. Retired US Air Force Colonel Buddy Styers talked about the significance of Gold Star families, as well as efforts to preserve the history of the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. Thanks to the Myrtle Beach Fire Department Honor Guard for posting the colors. The Garden Club provided the marker, and President Allyson Hirsch says members will maintain landscaping around it.
