Work is coming along at a historic African American cemetery off 21st Avenue North near Oak Street, just behind the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.  The little-known burial ground was in need of maintenance, which the city is accomplishing through its staff and a contractor.  Here’s an interim look at the progress to date.  Hidden grave markers are being revealed, while overturned headstones are being straightened.  Markers and capstones which would have been presented with white paint when they were new are being cleaned and repainted.  The overgrown fence has been removed and will be replaced with a new one.  The cemetery is on its way to being well-tended again.  Still to come are irrigation and landscaping.
