A street has been renamed in honor of PFC Joe McGarry, one of three Myrtle Beach police officers who died in the line of duty.  Earlier this year, the Myrtle Beach Planning Commission renamed Corsair Street at The Market Common as PFC Joe McGarry Street.  McGarry was shot and killed in 2002 while attempting to apprehend a murder suspect.  In addition to the new street name, Police Chief Amy Prock also unveiled a historic marker about PFC McGarry and presented copies of the marker and street sign to his parents.  A four-year veteran of the force, McGarry was well-known and well-liked by his fellow officers.  The newly-named PFC Joe McGarry Street is next to the Warren S. Gall Police Annex, where officers will see it every day when they come to work.  Right-of-way renamings also are underway for two other Myrtle Beach police officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
