Myrtle Beach marked the 22nd anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks with a solemn ceremony at the Unity Memorial on Farrow Parkway. Five hundred people gathered at Warbird Park to remember the day and its victims and heroes. More than 3,000 people who lost their lives, including many of the police, fire and other first responders who rushed to the rescue. Jaesen Moore moved the audience with the national anthem, while the Coastal Shields Pipes & Drums provided “Amazing Grace” for the wreath-laying. Speakers from the FDNY and NYPD recalled their actions that day and in the days which followed. The Unity Memorial features a steel beam from the North Tower of the World Trade Center, presented to the Myrtle Beach community on the 10th anniversary of the attacks, in recognition and appreciation of the Grand Strand’s hospitality to New York’s police and fire departments in the weeks and months of recovery following September 11, 2001.
