Myrtle Beach gives you a quick history lesson on the former Air Force base

See the history of the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, as told in six aerial photos spanning nearly seven decades. The collage here shows images of the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base from 1951, 1964, 1977, 1983, 2006 and 2018 (left to right, in two rows). The orientation isn't completely uniform, but you can see how the land has changed through the decades, from raw and unpopulated in 1951 to filled with trees, houses, lakes, streets, parks and businesses by 2018.

Note also that the base originally had an equal length cross runway, but it gradually was absorbed by the primary airport and runway. Whispering Pines Golf Course (once part of the Air Force Base) was beginning to appear in the 1964 photo. By 2006, Farrow Parkway had been realigned and the Grand Park lake was in place, but construction had just begun on The Market Common. By 2018, whole neighborhoods and more coexisted next to Myrtle Beach International Airport.
