Automated License Plate Readers help track down criminals

Did you know that the Myrtle Beach Police Department's Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) observed and read 38,708,022 vehicle plates during calendar year 2019? The ALPRs watch each lane of traffic, both entering and leaving the city limits, and read every license plate that drives by. The system checks tag numbers against state and national criminal databases. During 2019 alone, the ALPRs returned alerts on 114,966 vehicle tags for a variety of reported crimes.
