Accessibility & Beach-Going Wheelchairs

The beach-going wheelchair service is temporarily suspended.
We apologize for any inconvenience.

The City of Myrtle Beach is committed to accessibility for our residents and visitors with disabilities.  The following information will be helpful in your travels around the city.

The City of Myrtle Beach provides beach wheelchairs, free of charge, to residents and visitors alike who visit the city’s beaches.  The wheelchairs are distributed on a first come, first served basis due to popularity of the service and total number of wheelchairs available.   Note the number of wheelchairs available for use depends on the existing supply, as the chairs need consistent repairs due to weathering the beach elements.  To fairly distribute the wheelchairs, the city does not honor advance reservations, overnight requests or multiple day requests.

Beach wheelchairs are given to beach patrons for use for one calendar day, after which the wheelchair must be returned to the City of Myrtle Beach by 5:00 p.m. on the same day the wheelchair is delivered.  Weather permitting, delivery times are between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., seven days a week, excluding off-season city holidays.  The city does not close for Memorial Day, July 4 or Labor Day!  City holidays are, as follows:  New Year’s Day(January), Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (January), July 3 or 5 (substitute for July 4), Veterans Day (November), Thanksgiving (two days in November) and Christmas (two days in December).

Beach Wheelchair Requests...  Interested?  Request and schedule a beach wheelchair, if one is available, by contacting our staff at 843-918-1488.  The city needs the following information:

  •  Name
  • Phone Number
  • Precise Delivery Location

Location...  The location of delivery must be within the city limits of Myrtle Beach. The responsible party is prohibited from transporting any beach wheelchair to other locations, other than the address listed on the agreement form.  If the individual requesting the wheelchair doesn’t answer the phone; the Community Service Officer will attempt to leave a message advising him or her that the requested wheelchair is available for delivery.  If the individual does not call back within 30 minutes, the Community Service Officer will notify the next person on the list.

Delivery...  Upon delivery, the accepting party must show the city representative a legal form of identification, such as a driver’s license.  The party must also sign an agreement/wavier form accepting responsibility for the wheelchair, including responsibility for the condition of the wheelchair while in their care.  Any damage or misuse of the wheelchair beyond beach purposes may result in criminal and/or civil action.  The City of Myrtle Beach reserves the right to cancel or retrieve the property for any reason.

Pickup...  At the end of the day, a City of Myrtle Beach representative will contact the responsible party and collect the beach wheelchair.  The city accepts no reservations for the next day.  If the accepting party wishes to request a wheelchair to be delivered the following day, they must resubmit a request for that day.  The city offers no guarantee for the next day delivery of a beach wheelchair.

Third-Party Rental Wheelchairs...  In the event the city’s beach wheelchairs are unavailable, or if you want to have a beach wheelchair for overnight and multiple day usage, third party rental companies exist in the area.  Please note that the list of private companies as a courtesy resource, and the city does not endorse any commercial businesses.  The rental fees and restrictions are set by the individual companies, and the City of Myrtle Beach is not responsible for any reimbursement cost.

In South Carolina, any vehicle displaying a valid handicapped, Purple Heart, Disabled American Veterans or Medal of Honor license tag, or a valid and official handicapped hang tag, may park for free at any public-operated parking meter.  If your vehicle displays one of these, then you do not have to pay a municipal parking meter anywhere in South Carolina.  Of course, city buildings have designated handicapped parking spaces.

Myrtle Beach has 114 public beach access points (street ends, parks and other access points).  Here is the list of those public locations, from south to north. An asterisk (*) indicates beach access ramps only.
