Golf carts are not allowed on Kings Highway or in the bicycle lanes….

The two photos here show how not to drive golf carts on public road. By state law, golf carts are not allowed on primary roads, including Kings Highway and US 501. They also aren’t allowed on roads where the speed limit is greater than 35 miles per hour, so this golf cart on Kings Highway past Third Avenue South is a double violation.

Golf carts also aren’t allowed in the designated bicycle lanes. Ju...st as you can’t drive or park a car in a bicycle lane, you cannot legally drive a golf cart in a bicycle lane. In this instance, the golf cart is allowed to drive on the road (it’s not a primary highway, and the speed limit is 35 miles per hour or less), but instead is illegally driving in the bicycle lane.

By the way, you have to be a licensed driver to operate a golf cart on the public street. You cannot drive after dark nor more than four miles from the golf cart’s registered address. Golf carts also must be registered with the SC DMV and must have insurance.
