Local Eagle Scout constructs Little Free Libraries for Myrtle Beach

Four Little Free Libraries are now available in Myrtle Beach thanks to Eagle Scout, Cody King. King who is apart of Eagle Scout Troop 801 constructed the libraries as part of a community service project for an Eagle Scout award. The Friends of Chapin Memorial Library sponsored the materials needed for the building and installation of the Little Free Libraries. The libraries are located at Myrtle’s Market, Mary C. Canty Rec Center, Crabtree Memorial Gymnasium, and Pepper-Geddings Recreation Center.

A Little Free Library is a unique box, like the one shown here at Myrtle’s Market at the corner of Oak Street and Mr. Joe White Avenue, designated for people to donate books that are used for neighborhood book exchanges. Community members drop-off books and are allowed to take a book to read, too. The exchange is based on the honor system and organizers expect everyone to return the books to allow others to enjoy them.

Little Free Libraries provide 24-7 access to books in areas where books maybe scarce. King registered our Little Free Libraries on the national website and collected the first book donations for the boxes. City of Myrtle Beach Grants Manager, Diane Moskow-Mckenzie and Library Director, Jennifer Nassar worked closely with King to make this project a success. The Chapin Library MB staff will be the steward for the Little Free Libraries, while the Recreation Department staff members at each facility will check the libraries daily.
