Crime statistics continue to improve in Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach continues to see better crime statistics, thanks to our focus on public safety.  During the first six months of 2019, violent crime was down 14 percent.  That’s on top of a 17.4 percent decrease in Part 1 crimes during 2018.  The improved numbers were discussed during Tuesday’s City Council meeting.  One area that saw a slight increase for the first half of the year was larceny, a property crime.  That category saw increases in shoplifting and theft from motor vehicles, perhaps due to ongoing addiction issues for opioid users.   However, note that 85 percent of all thefts from motor vehicles did not involve forced entry.  In other words, the cars were unlocked in 85 percent of the cases!  “Crime prevention” means taking away the opportunity, so lock your car every time and prevent a crime.
