Myrtle Beach wins national award for beach preservation and restoration

The City of Myrtle Beach today received the Robert L. Wiegel Coastal Project Award for its beach preservation and restoration projects dating back to the 1980s.  The award was presented during the American Shore & Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA) conference at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.  The national award is named after one of the foremost coastal engineers and is the ASBPA’s most prestigious project award.  It’s presented to a coastal project that has stood the test of time and has shown a positive environmental, social or recreational benefit.

Myrtle Beach’s long history of beach renourishment and preservation is detailed in the ASBPA’s October magazine, Shore & Beach, which features the Myrtle Beach coast on the cover.  The highly technical, 22-page article details Myrtle Beach’s 40-year history of successful beach management and renourishment.  It features historic photos of renourishment projects through the years, along with steps the city took to protect its most valuable natural resource.  Here’s a link to the full ASBPA magazine article:  https://tinyurl.com/y4swyuj3.
