Where does the money go?

Public Safety is the City of Myrtle Beach’s biggest expenditure. As this graph shows, the Myrtle Beach Police and Fire Departments accounted for 57 percent of all General Fund expenditures during the last fiscal year. The Police Department was the largest by far, at $32.7 million, while the Fire Department accounted for $16.7 million in expenses.

Most of these costs are related to personnel services – the people who provide the service. Myrtle Beach’s “product,” if you w...ill, are the people who serve the community. Fully 73.5 percent of General Fund costs are for the hundreds of staff members who provide that “first in service” experience every day.
